EAT YOUR HEART OUT LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Posted on April 12, 2018

I have 5,000 words of Irving so far today and will easily get the next 1,000 to hit 6,000. Just chapters 25, 26 and 27 to go, and this suckers done. Well, there's a very short Epilogue, but who's counting? :)

I had so much fun with the chapter involving the nurses at the infirmary. They're all grandmothers from different stories. The title is called "What Big Teeth You Have." Here's a snippet showing that one of the grandmothers has a real edge to her:

The door burst open, and a boy with a pointed pinkish squid head wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans clomped in with very loud boots. I knew right away it was Morris.

"Sorry, Irving. They're after me. I freaked out in Sarya's room and went into my cocoon. Just came out, and they tried to stop me. You have to go!"

I hopped to my feet. "What about Sarya?"

Suddenly, a fur-covered arm reached in and snatched Morris up, yanking him out into the hall. I heard a loud growl.

Lizzie!

I barged out into the hall, my arms up to protect my face from attack.

The grandmother held Morris in her clawed hands. Covered in fur, she let out a howl and then stared at me. She was much bigger as a werewolf.

She still wore her white smock and slacks. The jarring contrast of the nurse's uniform inhabited by such a savage-looking beast caused me to freeze in my tracks.

"Get outside, and I'll tell you everything!"

Grinny and the red-head grandmother hung back from their feral coworker, pleading for Lizzie to calm down.

Lizzie snapped at Morris's head. "You were told not to check on the fairy." She glared at me.

Grinny looked at me, overwhelmed with what was happening.

Morris gagged and then a cloud of black ink shot out from under the many tentacles waving about around his mouth. The lighter-than-air ink spread quickly enveloped the hall in a black cloud.
